When to call an emergency locksmith

An emergency call is the right call when you cannot get in, cannot lock up, or the door has been forced. We answer 24 hours a day, and the person who picks up is at the shop on Macdonald Street rather than at an answering service.

Arrival across Vancouver is normally 20-30 minutes. The service call is $75 in standard hours; after-hours labour starts at $150 between 5 pm and 9 pm and is $250/hour from 9 pm to 8:30 am. Whichever applies to you is quoted on the phone before anyone leaves the shop.

Almost every lockout is opened non-destructively. Drilling is the last resort, not the first move, and it never happens without telling you first.

House lockout

Keys inside, door shut, or a lock that has stopped turning. A house or apartment lockout is $80-$160 in standard hours, with after-hours labour on top overnight and at weekends.

We pick the lock open on most modern residential hardware, so the door, the frame and the cylinder are all still usable afterwards. Suite doors, building common doors, patio slider locks and mailbox locks are all part of the same call.

If the key is gone rather than inside, say so on the phone. That is a different job: we open the door and then rekey the cylinder at $25-$45 per cylinder so the missing key stops working. If every key is gone, start at all keys lost instead.

Car lockout

Keys locked in the cabin or the boot. A car lockout is $80-$160 in standard hours, the same band as a house lockout, with after-hours labour on top overnight.

We use proper automotive entry tools on the door seal and the latch. We do not break windows, and we do not use a slim jim on a car with side airbags or wiring in the door card. Most vehicles are open in a few minutes once the technician is on site. The full car lockout page walks through what we do on each type of vehicle.

Bring photo ID and something that shows the car is yours, such as the insurance papers or the registration. If the key itself is lost or the fob has died, that is a key job rather than a lockout: see car key replacement or the wider automotive locksmith page.

Business lockout

Storefronts, offices, warehouses and strata common doors. Commercial lockouts start in the same $80-$160 band, and the quote goes up from there when the door carries a mortise lock, panic hardware, a roll shutter or an electric strike.

We ask for proof that you are entitled to be in the space before we open it: a lease, a business card matching the signage, a strata council letter or a manager on the phone. That check is not negotiable, and it is the reason a commercial call is worth making to a licensed shop rather than to whoever answers first.

Once you are back in, a forced or failing door usually needs more than an opening. See commercial locksmith for lock changes, master key systems and strata work.

What an emergency call costs

There is one price sheet for the whole site and this is the part of it that applies at 3 am.

  • Service call, standard hours: $75.
  • Lockout, home or business: $80-$160.
  • After-hours labour, 5 pm to 9 pm: from $150.
  • After-hours labour, 9 pm to 8:30 am: $250/hour.
  • Rekey after a lost key: $25-$45 per cylinder, or $60-$120 per cylinder on high-security hardware.

The full sheet, including keys, safes and commercial work, is on the prices page. There is no separate dispatch fee and no assessment fee.

What happens when you call

You reach the shop and describe the door or the vehicle. We quote the band and the after-hours rate if one applies, and we give you a real arrival window rather than a promise we cannot keep. Across Vancouver that window is 20-30 minutes; further out in Metro Vancouver it is longer, and we say so. Coverage by city is listed on service areas.

The technician arrives in a marked van, confirms the price against what is actually in front of them, and opens the lock. If the job turns out to be different from what was described on the phone, we stop and re-quote before doing the extra work.

For anything that is not urgent, book online and pick a window instead, or see everything we do on our services.
