Safes for homes and businesses in Vancouver

A safe is only as good as the way it is fitted and the rating it carries. We do both halves: the safes we stock at the shop are listed in the safes catalogue, and every one we supply can be delivered and anchored on site.

We work on gun safes, residential burglary safes, fire-rated document safes, depositories for retail cash handling, and the commercial TL-15 and TL-30 boxes that insurers ask for. If you already own one and it will not open, that is our work too.

Standard-hours service calls are $75. Arrival across Vancouver is normally 20-30 minutes. Everything on this page is on the one price sheet.

Safe installation (bolt-down)

An unbolted safe is a container with handles. A burglar does not need to open it in your house; they need to get it into a vehicle. Anchoring is what turns a safe into a safe.

We anchor into concrete slab where there is one, and into structural timber where there is not, using the manufacturer anchor points rather than drilling wherever is convenient. Placement matters as much as the bolts: a corner with two walls, away from a window, out of the first room a stranger walks into.

For a business, the same job includes deciding who holds the combination and how it is changed when they leave. That usually ends up tied to the master key and key control conversation rather than being a separate one.

Delivery and install is quoted with the safe. Bring the model, or the dimensions and weight if you already own it.

Locked out of your safe? 24/7 opening

Forgotten combination, dead battery on an electronic keypad, a lost safe key, or a lock that has failed with the door shut. Residential safe opening is from $150. Commercial TL-15 and TL-30 opening is from $300, because the box is built to resist exactly what we are about to do.

We do not drill until the non-destructive options are exhausted. A dead keypad battery is often a five minute fix. A forgotten combination on a mechanical dial can frequently be manipulated open. Only when neither works do we discuss drilling, and only after telling you what it will cost to repair the safe afterwards.

Proof of ownership is required before we open anything: photo ID plus something tying you to the safe or the address. For a business, a manager or director on the phone.

Out of hours the after-hours labour rates apply on top, from $150 between 5 pm and 9 pm and $250/hour from 9 pm to 8:30 am. If the safe is behind a door you also cannot open, start with emergency locksmith.

Combination changes and lock service

Changing a safe combination is $80-$150. Do it when somebody who knew the number leaves, when you inherit a safe with an unknown history, or when the number has been the same since the safe was delivered.

On a mechanical dial that means re-setting the wheel pack. On an electronic lock it means a new user code, and usually a new battery and a check of the solenoid while the door is open. We service both, and we replace failed electronic locks with a like-for-like unit rather than insisting on an upgrade.

Bolt work, hinge alignment and relockers are checked at the same visit, because a safe that is hard to close is a safe that will eventually not open.

What safe work costs

Straight from the price sheet:

  • Safe opening, residential: from $150.
  • Safe combination change: $80-$150.
  • Safe opening, commercial TL-15 or TL-30: from $300.
  • Service call, standard hours: $75.

Drilling and repair, when it is genuinely the only route left, is quoted on the spot once we know the make and the lock, and never started without your agreement.

Choosing a safe: the ratings that matter

Two different numbers get called a rating and they measure different things. A fire rating is a time and a temperature: how long the inside stays below a threshold in a fire. A burglary rating is a resistance class: how long a tested attack takes to get in.

RSC is the residential burglary standard most home safes carry. TL-15 and TL-30 are the commercial classes, where the number is the tested attack time in minutes, and they are what an insurer usually means when they ask for a rated safe. A fire-only document safe is not a burglary safe, whatever the sticker suggests.

Decide what you are protecting against first, then the size, then the lock type. The stock at the shop is in the safes catalogue and the wider shop, and we will talk it through at the counter at 4105 Macdonald Street or over the phone via contact us.
