What an automotive locksmith actually does

Modern car keys are not just cut metal. From roughly 2002 onward, every mainstream make embeds a transponder chip in the key head that the immobiliser checks before the engine cranks. From 2010 onward, proximity (smart) keys with rolling-code RF pairing became standard. Cutting the metal is now the easy part — the cost and complexity sits in the chip, the programming, and the OEM-level diagnostic tools needed to enrol a new key with the car's body control module.

That's why a dealer quote for a lost key on a 2020 Honda CR-V comes back at $750-$1,100. They're charging for an hour of bench-time on a tool they only use for that purpose. A mobile automotive locksmith with the same OEM-protocol programmer (Autel IM608, Smart Pro, Tango) does the same job in your driveway for $280-$420 — same chip, same software, same result.

Common car key situations

Locked out of the car

Non-destructive entry tools (long-reach + air wedge) open most modern vehicles in 5-10 minutes without scratching paint or bending the frame. $40-$80 for the lockout, 20-30 minute dispatch. We don't drill or pry — if your locksmith mentions either, find a different one.

Lost all keys, no spare

We cut a new key from the lock cylinder code (decoded by VIN or by reading the door cylinder), then program the new chip to your car's immobiliser. $180-$280 for transponder keys, $300-$420 for proximity smart keys. Need proof of ownership — registration or title.

Spare key duplication

Cheaper than the dealer for nearly every make. Standard transponder spare $80-$160, smart key spare $200-$300. Walk-ins welcome at our 4105 Macdonald Street shop or we come to you.

Key fob remote replacement

Door-lock remote stopped working? Could be a dead battery, a cracked button contact, or a desync from the car. We replace OEM and quality aftermarket fobs and reprogram them on-site. $80-$200 depending on make.

Auto locksmith FAQs

Can you make a key for my car without the original?

Yes, for most vehicles 2008 and newer (and many older ones). We decode the cut from the door cylinder or VIN-pull the original code, cut the blade, then program the transponder or smart key to your car's immobiliser. Bring registration or title — we verify ownership before cutting any car key.

Why is a Mercedes/BMW/Land Rover key so much more expensive?

Higher-security keys with stronger encryption and proprietary OEM tools. Mercedes FBS3, BMW EWS/CAS, and Land Rover keys often run $400-$900 because the programmer software is more expensive and the procedure is longer. We're still 30-50% under dealer pricing on these brands.

Do you handle proximity (push-to-start) smart keys?

Yes. Toyota smart keys, Honda HR-V/CR-V proximity keys, Ford intelligent access, GM keyless, Hyundai/Kia smart keys, Nissan I-key — all programmable from our mobile unit. We carry blank smart keys for the common makes; rarer ones we order in 1-2 days.

Will my car still work with the old key after you make a new one?

Depends. By default, your old key stays valid. If you want the old key locked out (because it was stolen, for example), we can perform an all-keys-lost reset which erases every previous key from the immobiliser and only lets the new keys we cut start the car.
