A BMW smart key is not bought and copied; it is written into the car. The credential lives in the CAS module and the car will only run a fob that the module has been told to accept, which is why our BMW page treats every key as a module job rather than a blank and a chip. This four button fob is listed for the 3, 4 and 5 Series from 2009 to 2014, and those years straddle a chassis change: the E90 3 Series and E60 5 Series carry their credential in the earlier CAS generations, while the F30 3 Series, the F32 4 Series and the F10 5 Series moved to CAS4 and Comfort Access fobs. The 4 Series only ever existed on the F chassis, so a 4 Series owner is on the right page; for a 3 or 5 Series we confirm the chassis code from the VIN before we quote, because the fob and the procedure differ. The buttons typically give you lock, unlock, boot release and panic, and the fob also carries a mechanical blade for the driver's door. With one working fob in hand the job is to read the key table, add the new fob and verify start, central locking, boot and the door handle sensors, and your existing fobs keep working. With no working fob the CAS module has to be read and the ISN recovered from the engine controller before a virgin fob can be written, which is the long version of the job. On the F chassis cars the start button is electronic, so a no-start is almost always the fob, its battery or a module, and diagnosing which is the first thing we do rather than the last.
