Superlock steel security doors Vancouver

Superlock is a category of multi-point steel security door, standard in Israeli and European apartment construction and increasingly specified in Vancouver renovations. The door body is steel rather than timber, a locking bar throws several bolts into the frame at once, and the cylinder is a restricted high-security unit rather than the builder hardware it replaces.

The point is that it is one engineered assembly. A normal exterior door fails at whichever part is weakest, usually the jamb beside the strike. On a multi-point steel door there is no single point to attack: the bolts are spread top to bottom, the bar rides inside the door body where a pry bar cannot reach it, and the frame is steel and welded at the strike and hinge positions.

It is not the right answer for most doors. It is the right answer for a specific set: penthouse and ground-floor suites with a history, properties with a documented threat, storage and collection rooms, and renovations where the owner wants commercial resistance behind a residential finish.

New install into an existing opening

The frame usually has to come out, because a timber jamb will not carry a steel door or take the strike loads. That is a half-day per door and it is measured before anything is ordered: opening width and height, wall build-up, swing direction and threshold height all change the order.

Servicing a door somebody else fitted

Common on suites bought with the door already in place. Most faults are the locking bar drifting out of alignment over years of use, or a cylinder nobody can get keys for because the original dealer is gone. We can usually realign the bar and re-register the cylinder on a platform we hold.

The cheaper alternative, said out loud

For most Vancouver and Burnaby homes, a high-security cylinder plus a reinforced strike plate and frame reinforcement gets most of the benefit for a small fraction of a steel door. We will quote that instead when it is the honest answer: see high-security locks and door repair in Vancouver.

Doors are quoted after a measure, not over the phone, because the opening decides most of the price. What we can say before attending is that it is a considered purchase rather than a lock change, and that anyone quoting a figure without seeing the opening is guessing.

The visit itself is a standard $75 service call in normal hours, credited against the job if you go ahead. Servicing an existing door, realigning a locking bar or swapping a cylinder is quoted on the same sheet as the rest of our work at prices.

Day to day the door needs almost nothing: keep the locking bar lubricated with a graphite-based lubricant and check the strike alignment once a year. Nearly every service call we get on these is a bar that drifted out of line over a decade of use.

Can a Superlock door be retrofitted into an existing condo?

Usually, but it is a real install rather than a swap. The frame normally has to be replaced to carry the steel door and the strike loads, and the door weight needs the hinges specified with it. Plan for a half day per door, and check your strata bylaws on entry doors first.

Are Superlock doors fire-rated?

Many models are, at 20, 45 or 90 minutes. It is not automatic. If the building requires a rated entry door under the BC Building Code, the rating has to be specified when the door is ordered.

How is the cylinder rekeyed?

The same way as any Mul-T-Lock or Medeco: the cylinder comes out, goes to the bench and is restacked to a new combination, $60-$120 per cylinder. New keys are cut to registered code for $30-$80 against the key card.

Can I service the door myself?

The routine part, yes: keep the multi-point locking bar lubricated with a graphite-based lubricant and check the strike alignment annually. Cylinder work and lockouts on a restricted platform need an authorized dealer.

Do I actually need a steel door?
