Jeeps lose keys outdoors. That is not a joke about the brand, it is what the call log says: trailheads on the North Shore, Sea to Sky pull outs, gravel lots. Because the key is gone rather than broken, most Jeep jobs are all-keys-lost, which starts from $180 and is done where the vehicle sits.

A blade transponder key for an older Wrangler, Grand Cherokee or Compass is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity key for the JL Wrangler, the Gladiator, the Renegade or the current Cherokee is $280-$420. Published bands are on the price list. Wrangler

Blade transponder on the JK and earlier, proximity on the JL. The most common Jeep key we cut in this city, and the one most often cut in a parking lot.

Grand Cherokee

Blade transponder on the older trucks, proximity from the fourth generation. Ignition faults on the earlier ones are frequently mistaken for key faults.

Cherokee and Compass

The current Cherokee is proximity only. Compass starts on a blade key and moves to proximity in the second generation.

Renegade and Gladiator

Proximity only from launch. Programmed at the vehicle through the OBD port with the security data recovered on site.

What a Jeep key costs, dealer or locksmith

Blade transponder key

$180-$280 cut and written to the immobiliser for the JK Wrangler and older Grand Cherokee and Compass.

Proximity key

$280-$420 for the JL Wrangler, Gladiator, Renegade and current Cherokee.

Spare beside a working key

$180-$240 blade, $300-$420 proximity. Worth doing before the next trip rather than after.

From $180. This is the Jeep-specific case: no key left, key code pulled, blade cut, fresh credential written.

Service call

Standard hours are a $75 service call, which is what most trailhead jobs fall under. Evening labour is $150, overnight $250/hour.

Jeep faults that look like a key problem

The Grand Cherokee that turns but will not crank

On the older Grand Cherokee this is the ignition, not the key. New keys will not fix it and we will tell you so before cutting one. That work is ignition repair.

Fob cells after a season outdoors

Cold and damp shorten a fob cell. A JL Wrangler that has stopped unlocking on approach usually wants a battery and a resync.

Recovering a Jeep with nothing left
