Volvo key and fob replacement in Vancouver

Volvo keeps its key credentials in the central electronic module, so a new key is written into the car rather than copied from an old one. That is the technical reason a Volvo key is not a hardware-store job, and it is a job we do at the kerb.

A blade transponder key for an older XC90, XC60, S40, V50, XC70 or C30 is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key for a newer XC90, XC60, XC40, S60, V60, S90 or V90 is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180. Most Vancouver addresses are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published figures are on the price list and the car key replacement page covers the rest of the makes.

Volvo models, years and key types

XC90

Blade transponder on the first generation, proximity smart key on the second. The XC90 is the Volvo we cut most keys for in Vancouver.

XC60 and XC40

XC60 moves from a blade key to proximity part way through; the XC40 has been proximity since launch here.

S60 and V60

Blade transponder on the older cars, proximity from the current generation, including the Polestar trims.

S90 and V90

Proximity smart key throughout. Written through the central module at the vehicle with all functions tested.

S40, V50, XC70 and C30

Blade transponder. These are the Volvos whose ignition cylinders wear at the wafers and start sticking.

What a Volvo key costs, dealer or locksmith

Published figures. A dealer key has to be written at the dealership, so a car that will not start needs a flatbed first.

Blade transponder key

$180-$280 cut and written through the central module for the older XC90, XC60, S40, V50 and XC70.

Proximity smart key

$280-$420 for the newer XC90, XC60, XC40, S60, V60, S90 and V90.

Spare beside a working key

$180-$240 blade, $300-$420 proximity.

All keys lost

From $180. The module has to be read and a fresh credential written, and the missing key is voided.

Service call

Standard hours are a $75 service call. Evening labour is $150 from 5 to 9 pm and $250/hour from 9 pm until 8:30 am.

Volvo has shipped some unusually clever key fobs, and the clever ones crack at the case and lose their cells first. Where the electronics are sound we rebuild rather than replace.

S40, V50 and XC70 ignitions

These cylinders wear and the key starts to stick, then bind. We rebuild or swap the cylinder at the car and key it to your existing key where the lock allows; that is ignition repair.

Keys lost away from the car
