The first-generation S40 sedan and V40 wagon are a slightly odd branch of the Volvo family tree, and their keys do not always match what people expect from other Volvos of the same years. This is a full transponder key for those two models: a cut blade plus a working chip, not a shell. How to tell you need it: the car is an S40 or V40 built between 1996 and 2004, it has a turn-key ignition, and the key you have (or had) has a plain head with the chip hidden inside. If your key has remote buttons, the remote part is a separate item, and this listing covers only the key that starts the car. Programming is where this differs from a simple copy. The new chip has to be registered with the car, so we need the vehicle, its registration, and your photo ID at the same place as our equipment, whether that is our shop or your driveway on a mobile call. With one working key in hand, adding a spare is straightforward. With none, the job is longer but still doable. Older S40 and V40 ignitions also wear, and a worn cylinder can make a new key feel sticky. If that happens we will tell you honestly whether it is the key or the lock.
