The teardrop-shaped BMW key with three buttons and a two-track laser blade is the classic E46 and E39 era key, and it lingered on some models until late in the decade. Inside is both the remote and the EWS transponder, and on many of these keys a rechargeable battery that charges while the key sits in the ignition. That rechargeable cell explains a lot of the complaints we hear. If you drive the car rarely, or the key is very old, the battery can no longer hold a charge and the buttons stop working, even though the car still starts. If the car will not start either, the problem is more likely the transponder or the EWS module. Telling those apart is the first thing we do. The blade is BMW's two-track internal cut, cut on our code machine. The key then has to be accepted by your car's EWS system, which requires working with the vehicle and, on some models, with the EWS module data.
