The E65 and E66 7 Series moved BMW into the smart key era. Instead of a key with a blade you turn, these cars use a slim rectangular remote and a start button, and some are fitted with Comfort Access so the car unlocks when you approach. This four-button smart key is the replacement for 2002 to 2008 models. The buttons usually handle lock, unlock and trunk, plus a fourth function that depends on how the car was equipped. Because 7 Series options varied widely, check the button symbols on your current key against the photos, and ask us to confirm for your trim/year. A 7 Series key of this generation is not something you can simply clone. The new key has to be prepared using data from the car and then accepted by the vehicle's security system. That means working at the car, and we will need the registration and your photo ID before we begin. Most of these keys also contain an emergency metal blade for the door lock, for when the battery in the car is flat.
