BMWs of this era moved from a traditional ignition to a rectangular fob that you push into a slot on the dash before pressing start. The fob carries three buttons, lock, unlock and trunk, and talks to the car's key module both by radio and through the slot. Some cars added comfort access so the fob can stay in a pocket. What matters for a replacement is that the fob must be coded to that specific car. BMW stores key data in the car, and a new fob is programmed with diagnostic equipment while the car is present. Registration and photo ID are required. Ask us to confirm for your model and year, because the fobs for different body styles and comfort access look alike but are not interchangeable. There is also a mechanical blade tucked into the fob for the door lock. It has no electronics and is only for getting in when the fob or car battery is flat. We cut that blade to your lock on our code machine. The fob charges through the dash slot on many of these cars, which is why a key that sits in a drawer for months can stop working until it has been used again.
