The Mazda smart key, and how we set one up.
Miata owners with the keyless start option have a smart key that is easy to miss: the 2009 to 2015 MX-5 starts from a knob on the dash rather than a key, and the fob stays in your pocket. This is the four-button smart key for those cars, with lock, unlock, trunk and panic. If your Miata starts by turning a regular key in the ignition, you need a different key altogether. Because the MX-5 is often a second car, its fob can sit for months in a drawer, and the battery runs down. A fob that will not unlock the doors on the first sunny weekend usually needs a battery, not a replacement. Lost keys and fobs that have been through the laundry are another matter. To replace one, we register the new smart key to the car with diagnostic equipment, which means the Miata has to be present, and we cut the auxiliary key inside the fob to your door lock. The owner should bring the registration and photo ID. We can work at our shop or wherever the car is garaged. Ask us to confirm the fit using your VIN.
