Mazda used one four button fob across three of its crossovers in 2020 and 2021: the small CX-3, the mid-size CX-5 and the three-row CX-9. The fourth button is usually the liftgate, added to lock, unlock and panic. Shared shells do not mean a fob will run more than one vehicle, though. Each fob is programmed to one SUV. If you own a CX-9, the fourth button is particularly useful because the liftgate is heavy. On a CX-3, which has a manual liftgate on many trims, a four button fob may not match; ask us to confirm for your trim and year. What happens when the fob battery dies? You can still start the SUV by holding the fob up to the start button. To open the doors, slide out the hidden key and use the driver's lock. That key comes uncut, so we cut it to your vehicle on our code machine. Programming takes place at the vehicle, through its diagnostic port. Bring the SUV, the registration and photo ID. A spare is always quicker to add than starting from no keys, though we do both at the vehicle.
