To change a Schlage lock code, enter the six-digit programming code, press the Schlage button, then press 1 to add a code or 2 to delete one, and enter the four-digit code twice. The programming code is on a sticker behind the keypad and in the user guide, and if it is lost a factory reset restores the defaults.

Find your Schlage model: BE365, FE595, Encode, Sense and Connect

The steps differ by family, so start with the lock in front of you. The model number is on the sticker under the battery cover, but the outside of the lock gives it away too.

  • BE365 Keypad Deadbolt: rubber push buttons, a round Schlage button above them, a key cylinder and a thumbturn. The FE595 and FE575 put the same keypad on a lever or knob.
  • Encode (BE489, BE499 Encode Plus, FE789 lever): a flat touchscreen with a house icon, Wi-Fi built in, and a black round reset button beside the inside thumbturn.
  • Sense (BE479): a touchscreen with the Schlage logo at the top, Bluetooth, paired with the Schlage Home app.
  • Connect (BE469ZP): the same touchscreen, but it joins a Z-Wave hub or alarm panel rather than a phone.

Schlage's BE365 product page lists it as Grade 2 with 19 user codes on one 9-volt battery. The Encode carries Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.36 according to Schlage's ratings note, and all three touchscreen families run on four AA batteries.

How to change a user code on a Schlage keypad deadbolt

A Schlage keypad lock has no edit step. You change a code by deleting the old one and adding the new one, both from the keypad, and it takes under a minute with the door open.

First find the six-digit programming code. On the BE365 and FE595 it is on the sticker on the back of the keypad assembly and on the front of the printed guide, per Schlage's keypad locks user guide. Keep the door open so a mistake cannot lock you out.

  1. Enter the programming code and wait for three orange flashes and three beeps.
  2. Press the Schlage button, then press 2. Enter the old four-digit user code, then enter it again. One green light and a long beep means it is gone.
  3. Enter the programming code again, press the Schlage button, then press 1. Enter the new four-digit code, then enter it again. One green light and a long beep confirms it.
  4. Close the door and test the new code from outside, with the key in your pocket.

Two rules from the guide: the new code must not match the first four digits of the programming code, and the lock holds up to 19 user codes. If you no longer know which code a former tenant had, delete all codes (below) and re-add the ones you want.

How to add or delete codes on a Schlage lock

Keypad models (BE365, FE595, FE575)

Single codes follow the steps above. To delete every code at once, enter the programming code, press the Schlage button, press 6, then enter the programming code a second time, per Schlage's delete-codes article.

To change the programming code itself: programming code, Schlage button, 3, then the new six-digit code twice. Write it down somewhere other than the door.

Encode, Encode Plus and the Encode lever

Out of the box the Encode programs from its touchscreen: enter the six-digit programming code, enter the new user code (four to eight digits), press the add icon, then re-enter the code to confirm. Deleting uses the delete icon the same way, per Schlage's Encode instructions.

Pairing the lock with the Schlage Home app changes that. Pairing deletes the programming code, and from then on every code is added, deleted or scheduled in the app rather than at the door.

Sense and Connect

The Sense manages codes in the Schlage Home app over Bluetooth, and the Connect through its Z-Wave hub. Both still accept programming at the touchscreen with the programming code, using the same Schlage button, 1 and 2 sequence as the keypad models.

How to factory reset a Schlage keypad lock and what you lose

A reset erases every user code and any custom programming code and puts the defaults back. The trap is that the defaults exist only on the sticker and the guide, and Schlage's reset article puts it in capitals: customer service cannot retrieve lost default codes.

BE365 and FE595

  1. Remove the battery cover and disconnect the 9-volt battery.
  2. Press and release the Schlage button.
  3. Within ten seconds, reconnect the battery. The Schlage button lights green for a second.
  4. Press and hold the Schlage button until it lights green and the lock beeps.
  5. Try a default user code. If it does not unlock, start again from step 2.

Encode

Take off the battery cover and press and hold the black round button to the right of the thumbturn until the red LED stops flashing and turns solid blue, up to ten seconds. Then open the door and enter default user code A or B, following Schlage's Encode reset steps. The reset also clears the app pairing, so plan on setting up Wi-Fi again.

Sense and Connect

Slide the battery cover up, disconnect the batteries, then press and hold the Schlage logo on the touchscreen while reconnecting them; the green check and the inside button flash three times. Test a default code with the door open. On the Connect, Schlage's reset note adds that this does not clear the Z-Wave enrolment, so exclude it from the hub separately.

Schlage keypad not working: battery, blinking light meanings and lockout after wrong codes

Start with the battery. The keypad models take one 9-volt alkaline and the Encode, Sense and Connect take four AA alkalines, and Schlage's battery guidance says lithium cells cause drain problems and are not supported.

The lights on a BE365 or FE595 mean specific things, straight from the user guide:

  • Green: correct code, or a programming step accepted.
  • Red: wrong code, or an error in programming.
  • Red then green after a correct code, with a pause before the bolt moves: the battery is low. Change it now.
  • Blinking red: the battery is critically low.
  • Keypad will not light at all: too many wrong codes. Wait 30 seconds and try again; if it still will not light, the battery is flat.

The Encode is stricter. After three wrong codes in a row the keypad disables for 30 seconds, after four the alarm sounds for 30 seconds, and each further wrong entry disables it for a minute, per Schlage's note on failed attempts. Unlocking from the app or entering a correct code clears it.

If the keypad accepts the code but the bolt grinds or stops, the problem is the door, not the electronics. A strike plate a few millimetres off makes the motor fight the bolt; our post on why the strike plate matters more than the lock shows the fix.

When a Schlage lock needs a locksmith

Every Schlage keypad and smart deadbolt keeps a mechanical cylinder for the key override, and on the residential models it is a standard Schlage keyway. If you have lost track of who holds keys, a rekey is $25 to $45 per cylinder on our published price list, first two keys included, and it can be keyed to match your other Schlage doors; see lock rekey in Vancouver.

Call when the reset fails twice with the correct defaults, when the bolt binds with the door open, or when a door in Kitsilano or Burnaby was drilled for a different prep and the new lock will not seat. Swapping a keypad lock for an Encode or Sense falls under smart lock installation, and a lost programming code on a lock that will not reset is solved with a new lock.

Common questions

Where is the programming code on a Schlage lock?

On the BE365 and FE595 it is on a sticker on the back of the keypad assembly, which means taking the keypad off the door, and on the front of the printed user guide. On the Encode it is on a label beside the reset button under the battery cover, and on the Sense and Connect it is on the back of the inside assembly.

Can a locksmith reprogram a Schlage lock?

Yes, with the programming code, or with the default codes and a factory reset. Without either, nobody can recover the codes, Schlage included, so the honest fix is a new lock. A locksmith can always rekey the override cylinder so the lock takes the same key as your other doors.

Encode vs Connect vs Sense: which is which?

Encode has Wi-Fi built in and needs no hub, Sense uses Bluetooth and the Schlage Home app, and Connect uses Z-Wave on a smart-home hub or alarm panel. All three share the same touchscreen and four AA batteries; only the radio and the app differ.

Can I change the code without the programming code?

No. Every add, delete and change on the keypad starts with the six-digit programming code. If it is lost, the only route is a factory reset using the default codes on the sticker, and if those are gone too the lock cannot be reprogrammed and should be replaced.
