Mailbox Lock Replacement Vancouver

A mailbox lock replacement is $40-$140 fitted. That covers the new cylinder, the cam or spring clip that suits your compartment door, the keys, and the fitting. Keys are cut at the box, so you leave with a working set, and the old key stops working the moment the old cylinder comes out.

Extra keys are $5-$15 each at the counter and a blank is $4.75. A standalone visit in standard hours, 8:30 am to 5 pm, carries the $75 service call, and it is quoted on the phone before anyone is dispatched rather than added afterwards. Every figure on this page matches the prices page.

Four different things get called a mailbox in this city, and which one you have decides who is allowed to change the lock. Work it out before you book. If you are not sure, send a photo of the front of the box and one of the back of the compartment door and we will tell you, free, rather than driving out to say it.

• A private box on your own wall or post. Yours. We replace the lock, cut the keys, done.
• An apartment or condo lobby bank. The bank belongs to the building. The individual compartment lock is normally the resident responsibility, and the rule varies by building.
• A strata parcel locker or a shared compartment. The strata council or the property manager authorises the work, not the resident.
• A Canada Post community mailbox. The freestanding kerbside unit is Canada Post equipment and the lock is theirs.

Proof of entitlement is asked for on all four. A lease or tenancy agreement, photo ID carrying the address, a strata letter, or the building manager on the phone. It is not negotiable and it is not personal: what sits behind a mailbox door is other people's mail, and a locksmith who skips that check is the reason the rule exists.

The freestanding kerbside banks, the ones Canada Post calls community mailboxes, are Canada Post property from the shell to the cylinder. The compartment lock is theirs, so it is not ours to change and not ours to copy a key for. If you have lost the only key, or the lock has seized, or the key snapped off in it, the first call is to Canada Post. They replace the lock and issue the new keys, and they charge a replacement fee for it.

What we can do is settle which box you have before you waste a morning. Photograph the front of the bank and the label on your own compartment door and send it in. A good share of the community mailbox calls we take turn out to be a building bank in a lobby or a parkade, which is work we can do the same day. The rest we redirect, and that answer costs nothing.

One thing worth knowing: a community mailbox that has been forced, with a bent door or a punched lock, is also a Canada Post repair, and it is worth reporting to them and to the police even if nothing of yours was taken. A forced bank is normally hit again.

A lobby or parkade bank is a row of small compartments in one steel frame, and each door carries a cam lock: a short cylinder with a flat metal arm on the back that swings behind the frame to hold the door shut. The length of that cam, and whether it turns 90 or 180 degrees, decides which replacement fits. That is the whole reason we ask for a photo of the back of the door. Older Vancouver banks and the panels going into new builds take different cams, and guessing costs a second visit.

The usual jobs, in the order we see them: the only key is lost, so the cylinder is replaced rather than picked, because a new mailbox cylinder with fresh keys costs less than the time to open the old one carefully. A worn wafer lock that has started chewing keys. A door that has been pried, which usually means the cam is bent as well as the lock. And tenant turnover, where the landlord changes the box lock at the same time as the suite.

On a turnover we do both in one visit. The suite side is either a lock rekey at $25-$45 per cylinder, which cancels every key the last tenant kept, or a lock change at $80-$160 plus hardware where the lock itself is worn out. Everything we do inside a home is on the residential locksmith page.

Parcel lockers, common entry cylinders and storage locker locks are the same visit as the mail bank, and doing them together is the cheap way to buy it. A whole panel done in one mobilisation costs less than the same compartments done one complaint at a time, and it ends with one keying schedule instead of a drawer of mystery keys.

What a panel job looks like: we count the compartments and check the cam type, agree which doors are being changed and which are being keyed alike, fit the cylinders, cut two keys per compartment, and hand the set over against a signature with a written keying schedule for the building file. A twenty to forty unit panel is normally one afternoon.

Authorisation is the whole job here. A council minute, a letter from the manager, or the manager on site. Strata and management work is billed on a trade account rather than at the door, which is set up through commercial partners. Offices, retail units and multi tenant buildings sit with commercial locksmith.

I lost my only mailbox key. What now?

On a private box or a building compartment, we replace the cylinder and cut you two keys, with the owner, landlord or strata authorisation. Recutting to the old key is not possible on most panel cylinders, because the code is not held anywhere. On a Canada Post community box, call Canada Post.

Is my box Canada Post or the building?

A freestanding bank out on the street or at the end of a cul de sac is almost always Canada Post. A panel inside a lobby, a mail room or a parkade is almost always the building. Send a photo and we will tell you which one you are looking at.

Can you cut a copy of a mailbox key?

Yes for a compartment you control, at the counter, $5-$15 depending on the blank. Bring the key and something showing the address is yours. No for a Canada Post compartment, and no for a compartment you cannot show you rent.

My mailbox was pried open. What now?

We fit a new cylinder and straighten or replace the cam, and we tell you honestly whether the door itself is worth keeping. Report it, because a stolen mail bundle is how identity fraud starts: watch for statements that stop arriving and for a replacement card you never asked for.

Do I need strata permission?

For your own compartment lock, usually not, though buildings differ. For a parcel locker, a common entry cylinder or a whole bank, yes, and we will deal with the council or the manager directly if that is easier for you.

Can you do the mailbox and the front door in one visit?
