Locksmith Aldergrove

Safe & Secure Locksmith is a licensed Vancouver lock shop, open since 1992 at 4105 Macdonald St, and we run mobile out to Aldergrove. Be honest about what that means: Aldergrove is the far east end of the Township of Langley, and the drive is real. The arrival window we quote is 45-60 minutes in normal traffic, and it is longer than that in the afternoon peak on Highway 1 or when the truck is already on a job. Because of the drive, a lot of Aldergrove work is better done as a booked visit than as an emergency. If you are rekeying a house after a purchase, changing locks on a shop, or setting up a master key system for a farm or a strata, book it and we will bring the right hardware in one trip rather than guessing and coming back. Key cutting is the job Aldergrove asks us for most, and it is the one where driving to Vancouver usually beats paying for a truck to drive to you. The counter at 4105 Macdonald St cuts and tests every key on the spot, so a planned trip in is cheaper than a callout for a handful of keys.

House, shed and office keys

House and office keys are $5-$15 each. Specialty and commercial blanks are $8-$30. A bare key blank is $4.75. We cut on a calibrated machine and we test every key in a matching cylinder before it leaves the counter, which is the step a hardware store kiosk skips and the reason a kiosk key sticks in the lock.

Restricted and high security keys

Mul-T-Lock, Medeco and other restricted keyways are cut to a registered code for $30-$80, and only against the written authorization the registry requires. If your strata, farm office or shop is on a restricted system, bring the authorization letter and the key code and it is a counter job.

Car keys, chip keys and fobs

A transponder car key spare is $180-$240 cut and programmed. A smart key spare is $300-$420. A full replacement where every key is lost starts at $180. Older gate and equipment keys, the kind that come with a tractor, a shipping container or a barn padlock set, we cut from the original or from a code.

Padlocks, gates and outbuildings

Acreage properties end up with a drawer of mismatched padlocks. We can key a run of padlocks alike so one key opens the gate, the shed, the barn and the trailer hitch, which is both easier to live with and easier to audit when a worker leaves. Aldergrove for us means the town centre and the rural blocks around it, out to the boundaries the Township draws:

• Aldergrove town centre. Fraser Highway through the village, the shops and small offices on either side, and the residential streets behind them.
• The 264 Street and 272 Street corridors. Mixed light industrial and commercial units, where most of our commercial lock changes and master key work sits.
• 56 Avenue and Jackman Road. Acreages, hobby farms and outbuildings. Gate hardware, padlock sets and shop doors rather than house deadbolts.
• Bradner and Otter districts. The rural edge toward Abbotsford. Long driveways and gates, so we ask for the gate code or a phone number that will actually be answered when the truck arrives.
• Aldergrove Regional Park edge. Newer residential streets with builder grade hardware, which is the single most common upgrade we are asked for out here.

Aldergrove hardware has a different profile from a Vancouver condo, and the right advice is different too.

Builder grade locks on newer streets. The subdivisions built in the last twenty years almost all shipped with the cheapest acceptable deadbolt and a hollow strike plate held by half inch screws. The lock is rarely the failure point. The strike is. Replacing the strike screws with three inch screws that reach the stud costs almost nothing and does more for the door than any cylinder upgrade. A lock change with hardware supplied and installed is $80-$160, and a rekey of the existing hardware is $25-$45 per cylinder with the first two keys included.

Outbuildings are the actual target. On acreage properties the house is not usually what gets hit. The shop, the equipment shed and the trailer are, because they sit away from the house and nobody hears anything. A shrouded shackle padlock on a proper hasp is a bigger improvement than anything you can do to the front door.

Gates buy you time, not security. A driveway gate stops a casual drive in and slows a truck down, which is worth something out here where response times are long for everybody. It does not stop someone on foot. Treat it as the first of several layers.

Safes are worth more here than in the city. Where help is 30 minutes away for anyone, a bolted down safe is the layer that actually holds. Residential safe opening starts at $150, a combination change is $80-$150, and a commercial TL-15 or TL-30 opening starts at $300. See safes.

The service call is $75 during standard hours. After hours labour starts at $150 from 5 to 9 pm and runs $250/hour from 9 pm to 8:30 am. A home or business lockout is $80-$160 during standard hours, opened without drilling on most modern locks. A lock change is $80-$160 installed, and a rekey is $25-$45 per cylinder, or $60-$120 per cylinder on high security hardware.

Commercial work is $80-$380 per door for a lock change depending on the hardware. A master key system starts at $300 setup plus $30-$80 per door cylinder, or $60-$200 per cylinder on a restricted keyway with a documented key registry. Car keys are $180-$280 for a programmed transponder and $280-$420 for a proximity smart key. Mailbox lock replacement is $40-$140.
