Passports, jewellery and some cash at home
Start at RSC. It resists the quick pry-and-hammer attack most home break-ins are, and the composite walls give an hour of fire protection. If the jewellery or watches are worth more than your contents policy covers without a safe, step up to a small TL-15 or TL-30 and ask your insurer which they need.
Rifles, shotguns and handguns
An RSC gun safe is the usual starting point at home, and the BR gun safe is the budget option without fire cover. In a condo or an upper floor the weight decides it: the all-steel Callisto TL-15 gun safe gives you a UL rating several hundred pounds lighter than a composite safe of the same height.
Till cash, deposits and the float
Staff drop cash into a depository during the day without ever knowing the combination. For cash left overnight, a TL-15 or TL-30 is what insurers usually write into the policy. Time-delay locks slow down a hold-up and are worth it at a counter.
Narcotics and controlled drugs
A pharmacy safe pairs a heavy steel body with a time-delay lock, so a robbery at the counter cannot force it open on demand. Drawers keep stock organised. Check your college or association rules for the exact requirement and we will match it.
Collections, inventory or a named rating
If an insurer has named a class, buy that class or higher. TL-30 covers most jewellery and watch collections. TL-30x6 protects the top, back and sides as well as the door. TRTL-30x6 adds tested resistance to cutting torches. These are heavy, so we plan the delivery route first.
Papers, photos and hard drives
Paper starts to char above about 400°F, so a Class 350 rating protects documents. Photos, hard drives and USB sticks need Class 150 or 125, which keep the inside much cooler. A fire safe or fire-rated filing cabinet is not a burglary safe, so if theft matters too, pick a composite safe with both.

Watch the sticker. A fire-only safe keeps heat out but often opens with a pry bar. If theft matters, look for a burglary class too.

Weight and floor
Composite TL safes start around 430 lb and the tall models pass two tons. We check the floor, the stairs and the elevator rating before we quote.

Getting it in
Doorways, turns and steps are measured on the quote visit. Most safes come fully assembled, so the route matters.

Anchoring
Many makers only honour their fire and burglary cover when the safe is properly anchored to the floor. We anchor every safe we deliver.

Safes for homes and businesses in Vancouver
A safe is only as good as the rating it carries and the way it is fitted. We do both. The safes in our safes catalogue come from several makers, and every one we sell can be delivered and anchored by our own locksmiths.
We supply gun safes, residential burglary safes, fire-rated document safes, cash depositories and the UL TL-15, TL-30 and TL-30x6 safes that insurers ask for. If you already own a safe and it will not open, that is our work too.

Choosing a brand and a rating
We carry safes from several makers, and the brand matters less than the rating on the label and the build behind it. Start with the burglary class your insurer or your contents call for, then compare door and wall thickness, the lock, the fire rating and the weight.
Composite safes, with a concrete barrier between steel plates, slow drills and grinders and also resist fire without a separate liner. All-steel safes are lighter for the same rating, which matters on upper floors. Each model in the showroom above lists its sizes, weights and build so you can compare like for like.
If the model you want is not in stock, most can be ordered in. Ask at the counter or by phone.
Safe installation (bolt-down)
An unbolted safe is a container with handles. A burglar does not need to open it in your house; they need to get it into a vehicle. Anchoring is what turns a safe into a safe, and many makers make their fire and burglary cover conditional on it.
We anchor into concrete slab where there is one, and into structural timber where there is not, using the maker's anchor points rather than drilling wherever is convenient. Placement matters as much as the bolts: a corner with two walls, away from a window, out of the first room a stranger walks into.
For a heavy safe we check the floor, the stairs and the elevator before quoting. Delivery and install is quoted with the safe. If you already own one, bring the model, or the dimensions and weight.
Locked out of your safe? Safe opening
Forgotten combination, dead battery on an electronic keypad, a lost safe key, or a lock that has failed with the door shut. Residential safe opening is from $150. Commercial TL-15 and TL-30 opening is from $300, because the box is built to resist exactly what we are about to do.
We do not drill until the non-destructive options are used up. A dead keypad battery is often a five minute fix. A forgotten combination on a mechanical dial can often be manipulated open. Only when neither works do we discuss drilling, and only after telling you what it will cost to repair the safe afterwards.
Proof of ownership is required before we open anything: photo ID plus something tying you to the safe or the address. For a business, a manager or director on the phone.
Out of hours the after-hours labour rates apply on top, from $150 between 5 pm and 9 pm and $250/hour from 9 pm to 8:30 am. If the safe is behind a door you also cannot open, start with lockouts.
Combination changes and lock service
Changing a safe combination is $80-$150. Do it when somebody who knew the number leaves, when you inherit a safe with an unknown history, or when the number has been the same since the safe was delivered.
On a mechanical dial that means re-setting the wheel pack. On an electronic lock it means a new user code, and usually a new battery and a check of the solenoid while the door is open. We service both, and we replace failed electronic locks with a like-for-like unit rather than insisting on an upgrade.
Bolt work, hinge alignment and relockers are checked at the same visit, because a safe that is hard to close is a safe that will eventually not open.

What rating does my insurer want?
Ask them for the class in writing. Most name a UL burglary class such as TL-15 or TL-30, sometimes with a cash limit. Bring that to us and we will match a safe to it.
Is a fire safe also a burglary safe?
Not usually. A fire safe keeps heat out but often opens with a pry bar. A composite safe does both. Check each model in the showroom: the burglary class and the fire rating are listed separately.
Can a safe go in a condo?
Yes, if it is sized for the floor and the elevator. We check the building rules and the route first. The all-steel Callisto TL-15 is several hundred pounds lighter than a composite safe of the same height.
Do you deliver and bolt it down?
Yes. Our own locksmiths deliver, place and anchor every safe we sell, and we set up the lock with you.
Do you open safes you didn't sell?
Yes, most makes, from small home fire safes to commercial TL-30s. Proof of ownership is required.
