This four-button version, with lock, unlock, trunk and panic, fits compatible Lexus models from 2008 to 2016. It talks to the car through low-frequency antennas in the doors and cabin, which is how the vehicle knows the key is inside before it lets the start button work. When the internal battery runs down, range falls first, then the car stops detecting the key. Lexus provides a backup: hold the key's emblem side against the start button and press it, and the car reads the chip directly. A hidden metal key slides out of the fob to open the driver's door.
