The HYQ14AEM smart key, and how we set one up.
Lexus was early to proximity keys, and by 2008 many of its sedans and SUVs used a smart key that never leaves your pocket. This four-button version, with lock, unlock, trunk and panic, fits compatible Lexus models from 2008 to 2016. It talks to the car through low-frequency antennas in the doors and cabin, which is how the vehicle knows the key is inside before it lets the start button work. When the internal battery runs down, range falls first, then the car stops detecting the key. Lexus provides a backup: hold the key's emblem side against the start button and press it, and the car reads the chip directly. A hidden metal key slides out of the fob to open the driver's door. Registering a new smart key to a Lexus is done with the vehicle present, using diagnostic tools at our shop or in your driveway. The emergency key gets cut to your door lock at the same time. Registration papers and photo ID are required. If you are down to your last key, adding a second now avoids a much bigger job later. Ask us to confirm fit for your model, as several Lexus smart keys look alike.
