The dealer is not the only option

For most vehicles on the road in Vancouver, a locksmith with automotive equipment does exactly what the dealer parts counter does: cuts a blade to your vehicle and pairs the transponder to the immobiliser. The difference is price, and the fact that a mobile technician can do it where the car is instead of where the dealer is.

What a transponder key actually is

Two components in one object. A mechanical blade that turns the lock, and a small transponder chip in the plastic head. When you turn the ignition, the car's immobiliser sends a radio challenge, the chip answers with its code, and the engine control unit allows fuel and spark only if the answer matches a code it has stored.

The job, step by step

1. Identify the platform

Year, make, model and the exact key type decide which blank, which cutter and which programming route. A 2011 Corolla and a 2021 RAV4 are unrelated jobs.

2. Get the blade right

With a working key, it is duplicated. Without one, the key is cut to code from the vehicle records or decoded from the lock itself, which is the process in can I get a new key with a VIN number.

3. Pair the chip

The programmer connects to the diagnostic port and adds the new key to the immobiliser's list. Some platforms need a manufacturer security code, some need a timed security wait, and on all-keys-lost jobs some need the module read directly.

4. Test everything

Start the car with the new key. Test the remote functions, lock and unlock, and the trunk. Then test the old keys, because on many platforms adding a key rewrites the whole list and a key you meant to keep can stop working if the job is done carelessly.

When the dealer is still the answer

Be honest about the exceptions. A small number of manufacturers restrict key data to franchised dealers on recent model years. Some very new platforms use online security that has not been made available to the aftermarket. And a car still under warranty with an immobiliser fault, as opposed to a lost key, belongs at the dealer because the fault is the problem, not the key.

What to bring

Vehicle registration or insurance in your name and matching photo identification. Every key you still have, including ones that do not work, because they are useful for identifying the system and sometimes for keeping in the list. Do not buy the fob first

The single biggest saving available is having a second key cut before you need it. With a working key present, a spare is a routine appointment at the bottom of the price range. If the key turns but nothing happens

Before assuming the key has failed, check the obvious. A dead fob battery affects the remote but not usually the immobiliser chip. A worn ignition cylinder can feel like a key problem and is not: that is ignition repair.
