The numbers first

A programmed transponder key for a Honda, Toyota, Ford, GMC or Chrysler is $180 to $280. A proximity smart key, the kind you keep in your pocket, is $280 to $420. European luxury platforms, meaning Mercedes, BMW and Land Rover, run $400 to $900. If every key is lost, the job starts at $180 and moves with the make, because the car has to be read instead of copied.

Those are shop prices, published on the prices page, and they are usually well under a dealer quote for the same key.

What you are actually buying

Three things, and the ratio between them decides your price. First, the blank: a plain transponder head is inexpensive, a proximity fob with a circuit board and a battery is not. Second, the cutting: a modern high-security sidewinder blade needs a different machine from a 1998 edge cut. Third, the programming: the key has to be introduced to the car's immobiliser, and on some platforms that requires a security code, a timed procedure, or a session with the manufacturer's network.

On an older Corolla the blank is cheap and the programming is quick, so you are near the bottom of the range. On a current Land Rover the fob is expensive and the security process is long, so you are near the top. Neither is padding.

Spare versus all keys lost

This is the biggest single lever, and it is entirely in your control. If you bring a working key, we duplicate and pair a spare: fast, predictable and at the lower end of the range. If there is no working key, the technician has to derive the key from the vehicle, which takes longer and sometimes needs the immobiliser read directly.

The advice is boring and it saves people hundreds of dollars: cut a spare before you need one. A second key today is a routine appointment. A first key at 9pm in a parkade is an emergency call at an after-hours rate. If you are already in the second situation, all keys lost is the page to open.

Dealer or locksmith

A dealer can always cut and program a key for your car, and for a small number of platforms they are the only option. For most cars on the road in Vancouver they are simply the more expensive option, because their pricing bundles a service appointment and, if the car will not start, a tow.

What about the VIN

A VIN identifies the vehicle, and for many manufacturers it can be used to obtain the key code, which lets a key be cut to the factory specification instead of traced from a worn original. Things that push the price up

Push-button start with no mechanical backup, because there is more to pair. A vehicle that has already been to a shop that half-programmed a cheap aftermarket fob, because the module often has to be cleared first. Rare or imported models where the blank has to be ordered. And the hour, because after-hours labour starts at $150 in the evening and $250 per hour overnight.

Things that pull it down

Having a working key. Coming to the shop instead of asking for a mobile visit. Calling during business hours. Aftermarket fobs from the internet

A cheap fob bought online is sometimes fine and sometimes a chip that no programmer will accept. When it fails, you have paid twice and lost an afternoon.
