Lexus put transponders in its keys earlier than many brands, so a late-1990s ES, GS, LS or RX key that looks like a plain metal key is almost certainly chipped. This is that key: a full-length blade with a black head and a transponder sealed inside, no buttons. Lexus keys from this generation often came in two flavours, a master key and a valet key, and the car treats them differently. If you are replacing a lost master key, mention it when you call, because what the car allows depends on which key types are still in your hand.
