Squeeze the little catch on a Passat, CC or Touareg fob from these years and a narrow metal key slides out. That is the emergency key, and on a car that starts from a slot or a button, it is the only mechanical way in when the fob battery or the car battery is dead. It disappears easily. It slips out of the fob in a pocket, it gets left with a valet, or a used car comes with the fob but an empty blade holder. This blade carries no chip and no transmitter. It will not start the car, and you do not need to bring the car for programming because there is none. One habit worth adopting: try the blade in the driver's door now and then.
