If your Toyota from 2007 to 2010 starts with a button and unlocks when you touch the door handle, it uses a smart key like this. Four buttons, commonly lock, unlock, trunk and panic, with a metal emergency key tucked inside. Smart keys behave differently from turn-key remotes. The car looks for the key's signal when you open the door or press start. When the battery fades, the car may still unlock, but warn that no key is detected. Toyota lets you hold the key close to the start button to get going while you replace the battery. Losing one is a different matter. A new smart key has to be registered to the car's smart system, which we do with the vehicle present. Registration and photo ID are required. If you still have a working smart key, the process is simpler than if all are gone. We also cut the emergency blade to your door lock so the new key gets you in when its battery is dead.
