Car keys from a licensed Vancouver shop
We have cut and programmed car keys for more than 30 years. As a mobile automotive locksmith we do most jobs at the car, or at the counter of our Kitsilano shop, so a car that will not start does not need a tow to the dealer.
Which job do you have?
Car key replacement is for a lost or broken key. Car key duplication is a spare from a working key. Key fob replacement is for a remote that is missing or dead. Ignition repair is for a key that will not turn.
Car key programming
Most keys made since the late 1990s carry a transponder chip, and push-to-start cars use a proximity smart key. Both have to be paired to the car after the blade is cut. We do the programming on the spot, at the car or at the counter, and test the key before we leave.
Makes we cover
Our main makes each have their own page with the key types and prices for that car, and the makes below share key families with them. Not listed? Call with the year, make and model, and we say on the phone if we can key it or if it is a dealer job.
What car key work costs
A transponder key is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key is $280-$420, and European luxury keys are $400-$900. Bring photo ID and the registration or insurance in your name.
Fleet and business vehicles
Company cars, delivery vans and trade trucks. Spares are cheapest when added while a key still works, so we can do a whole fleet in one booking.
Buick keys and fobs
Buick sits on General Motors immobiliser hardware, which is good news for the price of a key. A cut and programmed transponder key is $180-$280. A proximity smart key for a newer Enclave, Encore or Envision is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180 once we have recovered what the module needs.
We reach most Vancouver addresses in 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St, and we cut the blade on the van rather than ordering it in. The published bands are on the price list; the car key replacement page covers the same work across every make.
- EnclaveTransponder blade on the first generation, proximity smart key on the later cars. The Enclave is the Buick we are called out to most in Vancouver.
- Encore and EnvisionEncore starts on a blade key and moves to proximity; Envision is proximity throughout. Both are programmed through the OBD port at the car.
- LaCrosse and RegalBlade transponder on the earlier cars, proximity from the mid-2010s. Remote-start fobs are paired and tested along with the key.
- Verano and LucerneBlade transponder only. These are the Buicks where a worn cylinder and a worn key usually turn up in the same call.
Cadillac keys and fobs
Cadillac keys split cleanly into two eras. The older Escalade, CTS and SRX use a blade transponder, which is a $180-$280 job cut and programmed. Everything from the XT4, XT5 and CT5 forward is a proximity smart key at $280-$420. Lose every key and the module data has to be recovered first; that starts from $180.
All of it happens where the car is. We are 20 to 30 minutes from most Vancouver addresses, working out of 4105 Macdonald St. Published bands are on the price list, and the car key replacement page is the cross-make version of this one.
- EscaladeBlade transponder on the earlier trucks, proximity smart key on the later ones. The Escalade is the Cadillac we cut most often in Vancouver.
- XT4, XT5 and CT5Proximity only, push-button start throughout. Programmed at the car through the OBD port.
- CTSBlade transponder on the first two generations, proximity on the last. The CTS is also the model where ignition complaints arrive with the key call.
- SRXBlade transponder early, proximity from the second generation. Remote start is paired and tested with the key.
Chevrolet keys and fobs
Most Chevrolets on Vancouver roads still take a blade transponder key, which is a $180-$280 job cut and programmed at the vehicle. The newer crew-cab Silverado, the current Equinox and the later Tahoe and Suburban run a proximity smart key at $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180.
We cut from the key code on the van, so nothing is ordered in and nothing is towed. Most Vancouver calls are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Photo identification matching the registration is required before we cut, which is the point of the trade being licensed. Published bands sit on the price list and the car key replacement page covers every other make.
- SilveradoBlade transponder through the older trucks, proximity smart key on the newer crew cabs. Fleet sets are cut to one code on request.
- EquinoxBlade transponder on the first two generations, proximity from the third. The Equinox is our most common Chevrolet key call in the city.
- Tahoe and SuburbanBlade transponder on the earlier trucks, proximity from the current generation. Remote start is paired with the key.
- MalibuBlade transponder early, proximity on the later cars. Flip-key springs and worn blades are a common same-visit fix.
- Cruze, Sonic, Spark and TraxMostly blade transponder, with proximity on the higher trims. Small cars, same programming route.
Ford keys and fobs
Ford calls its immobiliser PATS, and it has been on the trucks and cars here since the late 1990s. A PATS blade key for an F-150, Escape, Explorer, Ranger or Mustang is $180-$280 cut and programmed. An Intelligent Access proximity fob for the newer trucks, the Bronco and the current Escape is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180 and includes reading the PATS data out of the vehicle.
We work from 4105 Macdonald St and reach most Vancouver addresses in 20 to 30 minutes. Nothing is towed and nothing is ordered in. The published bands are on the price list; the car key replacement page carries the same work for every other make.
- F-150PATS blade key on the older trucks, Intelligent Access on the newer ones. The F-150 is also where a failed ignition actuator rod gets blamed on the key.
- EscapePATS blade key for most of its life, proximity on the current car. The Escape is our most common Ford key call in Vancouver.
- Explorer and EdgePATS blade key early, Intelligent Access on the newer push-button trucks. Programmed at the kerb through the OBD port.
- Ranger, Bronco and MaverickThe returning Ranger, the Bronco and the Maverick are Intelligent Access only. All-keys-lost is handled at the vehicle.
- Mustang and TransitMustang moves from PATS blade to proximity; Transit runs the blade key and is a common fleet rekey.
GMC keys and fobs
GMC and Chevrolet share immobiliser hardware, so a Sierra key and a Silverado key are the same job with a different badge. A blade transponder is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key for a newer Sierra, Yukon, Terrain, Acadia or Canyon is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180 once the module has been read.
Trucks get done where they are parked, which matters when the truck is loaded or on a site. Most Vancouver addresses are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published bands are on the price list, and the car key replacement page covers the rest of the makes.
- SierraBlade transponder on the older trucks, proximity smart key on the newer ones. Worn cylinders are the second most common Sierra call after keys.
- Yukon and Yukon XLBlade transponder early, proximity on the current trucks. The module read happens at the vehicle, not at a dealership.
- Terrain and AcadiaBlade transponder on the first generations, proximity from the newer ones. Remote start is paired with the key and tested.
- CanyonProximity smart key on the current truck. Cut and programmed at the kerb in one visit.
- SavanaBlade transponder. This is the GMC we rekey for fleets, cutting a set of vans to one code where the owner wants it.
Kia keys and fobs
Kia shares its immobiliser family with Hyundai, so the equipment and the bands are the same. A blade transponder key for an older Sportage, Forte, Soul, Rio or Sorento is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key for a Telluride, Carnival, EV6, Seltos or a newer Sportage is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180.
Sportage and Forte are the two Kias we are called to most in Vancouver. Everything is cut and programmed where the car is, usually 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published figures are on the price list, and the car key replacement page carries the same work for every other make.
- Sportage and SorentoBlade transponder on the older crossovers, proximity smart key from the mid-2010s. Sportage is our most common Kia key call.
- Forte, Soul and RioBlade transponder for most of their run, proximity on the newer Forte and Soul. These are also the Kias most often needing a full ignition rebuild after a theft attempt.
- Telluride, Carnival, K5 and StingerProximity smart key only. The credential is written at the car through the OBD port.
- EV6, Niro and SeltosProximity smart key, with digital key features on some trims. We program the physical fob; the phone-based key is set up in the vehicle menu.
Lexus keys and fobs
Lexus adopted proximity keys earlier than almost anyone, so most of the Lexus fleet in Vancouver is already on a smart key. A proximity smart key for an RX, ES, NX, IS, GX, UX, LS, LX, LC or RC is $280-$420 cut and programmed. The older blade transponder cars are $180-$280. All keys lost starts from $180.
Because Lexus sits on the Toyota platform, the same tooling covers both and the price stays out of the European band. Most Vancouver calls are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published figures are on the price list; the car key replacement page is the cross-make view.
- RXBlade transponder on the first two generations, proximity from the third. The RX is the Lexus we cut most keys for in this city.
- ESBlade transponder early, proximity from the sixth generation. Older ES cylinders wear at the wafers and start sticking.
- NX and UXProximity only from launch. Programmed at the kerb with push start, lock, unlock and boot verified before we go.
- IS and RCIS starts on a blade transponder and moves to proximity; RC is proximity throughout.
- GX, LX, LS and LCBlade transponder on the older GX and LX, proximity on everything current. All-keys-lost is handled at the vehicle.
Lincoln keys and fobs
Lincoln runs Ford PATS hardware, so a Navigator key and an Expedition key are the same job. A PATS blade transponder key for an older Navigator, MKZ, MKX or Town Car is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity fob for the Aviator, Corsair, Nautilus, Continental or a newer Navigator is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180.
The whole job happens at the vehicle. Most Vancouver addresses are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published bands are on the price list, and the car key replacement page covers the same work for every badge.
- NavigatorPATS blade key through the older trucks, proximity on the current one. Worn cylinders on the pre-proximity Navigator are a regular call.
- Aviator, Corsair and NautilusProximity only. Programmed at the kerb, with the old fob disabled so a lost key cannot start the vehicle.
- MKZ and MKXPATS blade key on the earlier cars, proximity on the later ones. Both are done through the OBD port at the vehicle.
- Continental and Town CarContinental is proximity. The Town Car is a blade key and the Lincoln whose cylinder we replace most often.
Mitsubishi keys and fobs
Mitsubishi has a small dealer network here, which makes an independent option worth knowing about before you need one. A blade transponder key for a Lancer, Mirage, older Outlander or RVR is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key for an Eclipse Cross, an Outlander PHEV or a newer Outlander and RVR is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180.
We carry the blanks and the programmer, so the work happens at the car. Most Vancouver calls are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. The published bands are on the price list, and the car key replacement page is the same work for every other make.
- OutlanderBlade transponder on the earlier crossovers, proximity smart key from the mid-2010s. The Outlander is the Mitsubishi we get called to most in Vancouver.
- Outlander PHEVProximity smart key throughout. We program the key and the immobiliser only, with no work on the high-voltage system.
- RVRBlade transponder on the earlier cars, proximity on the later trims. Cut and paired at the kerb in one visit.
- Eclipse CrossProximity smart key from launch. Programmed through the OBD port with push start verified before we leave.
- Lancer and MirageBlade transponder and flip keys. The Lancer is the Mitsubishi whose ignition cylinder wears first.
Subaru keys and fobs
There is a lot of Subaru in this city and most of it spends weekends somewhere with gravel, which is where the keys go. A blade transponder key for an older Outback, Forester, Impreza or Legacy is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key for a newer Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Ascent or Solterra is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180.
We cut and program at the car, normally 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published bands are on the price list, and the car key replacement page carries the same work for every other make.
- OutbackBlade transponder on the older wagons, proximity smart key from the mid-2010s. The Outback is the Subaru we cut most keys for in Vancouver by a wide margin.
- ForesterBlade transponder early, proximity on the newer cars. Fob cells and worn shells are the two most common Forester complaints.
- CrosstrekBlade transponder on the first generation, proximity from the second. Programmed at the kerb through the OBD port.
- Impreza, WRX and LegacyBlade transponder on most of the range, proximity on the newer cars. The WRX is the Subaru most likely to arrive with ignition damage rather than a lost key.
- Ascent, BRZ and SolterraProximity smart key. The Solterra shares its platform with a Toyota, so the same tooling covers both.
Suzuki keys and fobs
Suzuki stopped selling cars in Canada, which means there is no dealer to send you to for a key. That is the practical reason this page exists: the cars are still on the road here and their owners have nowhere obvious to call.
A blade transponder key for a Grand Vitara, SX4, Swift, XL-7 or Vitara is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key on the higher Kizashi trims is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180. We come to the car, usually 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published figures are on the price list and the car key replacement page covers the rest of the makes.
- Grand VitaraBlade transponder from the mid-2000s. The Grand Vitara is the Suzuki we are called to most, and usually for a worn cylinder as much as a key.
- SX4Blade transponder across the range. Programmed through the OBD port at the car, typically inside the hour.
- SwiftBlade transponder. Cut from the code or traced from your working key, then written to the immobiliser on the spot.
- KizashiBlade transponder on the base trims, proximity smart key higher up the range. Both handled at the vehicle.
- XL-7, Vitara and AerioThe earliest of these are plain mechanical keys with no transponder at all, which we can cut to code. From the mid-2000s onward they need programming.
Volvo keys and fobs
Volvo keeps its key credentials in the central electronic module, so a new key is written into the car rather than copied from an old one. That is the technical reason a Volvo key is not a hardware-store job, and it is a job we do at the kerb.
A blade transponder key for an older XC90, XC60, S40, V50, XC70 or C30 is $180-$280 cut and programmed. A proximity smart key for a newer XC90, XC60, XC40, S60, V60, S90 or V90 is $280-$420. All keys lost starts from $180. Most Vancouver addresses are 20 to 30 minutes from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St. Published figures are on the price list and the car key replacement page covers the rest of the makes.
- XC90Blade transponder on the first generation, proximity smart key on the second. The XC90 is the Volvo we cut most keys for in Vancouver.
- XC60 and XC40XC60 moves from a blade key to proximity part way through; the XC40 has been proximity since launch here.
- S60 and V60Blade transponder on the older cars, proximity from the current generation, including the Polestar trims.
- S90 and V90Proximity smart key throughout. Written through the central module at the vehicle with all functions tested.
- S40, V50, XC70 and C30Blade transponder. These are the Volvos whose ignition cylinders wear at the wafers and start sticking.
