  • Chip generationsOlder Toyotas use 4C and 4D chips; then came the "G" chip around 2010 and the "H" chip from about 2013. The letter is stamped on the key blade near the head.

Smart Key

Toyota calls its proximity system the Smart Key. The cutover year differs by model, which is the detail that makes a phone quote accurate instead of a guess.

Corolla

RAV4

Blade transponder on the older crossovers, Smart Key from the current generation. The RAV4 is our most common Toyota fob call.

Camry

Prius

The Prius has run the Smart Key longer than most of the range, and it is a proximity fob rather than a blade key on the great majority of the cars on the road here. We program the key and the immobiliser only; there is no high-voltage work involved.

Tacoma, Highlander and 4Runner

Each moved from a blade transponder to the Smart Key at a different point. Tacoma fobs go missing at trailheads more than anywhere else, and we cut those where the truck is parked.

Lexus

Lexus is Toyota's luxury division and shares the key platform, so an RX fob and a Highlander fob are the same class of job. That keeps Lexus out of the European luxury band: a proximity Lexus fob is $280-$420, the same as a Toyota Smart Key, and an older blade key is $180-$280.

How do I know if my Toyota has a G or H key?+
Look at the key blade near the head. Most Toyota transponder keys from about 2010 on are stamped G or H. If it is worn off, the year and VIN tell us.
Can a Toyota key be copied from my existing one?+
For many older chips, yes: we clone the chip onto a new key. H-chip and Smart Key cars are programmed to the car instead.
