Locksmith Delta

Delta is three separate communities with one municipal name, and a locksmith who pretends otherwise will get the arrival time wrong. We run Highway 99 south and then Highway 17 or 17A from the shop at 4105 Macdonald St in Vancouver, so plan on 30-45 minutes to a Delta address once a technician leaves. Westham Island and the far end of Arthur Drive sit at the top of that band.

Rekeying a standard cylinder is $25-$45 and a restricted high-security cylinder is $60-$120. A lock change is $80-$160 installed. A home or business lockout is $80-$160 in standard hours. The service call is $75 in standard hours, after-hours labour starts at $150 between 5 and 9 pm and runs $250/hour from 9 pm to 8:30 am. Car keys are $180-$280 for a transponder and $280-$420 for a proximity smart key, cut and programmed at the vehicle. Everything is on the price list.

Ladner is a historic fishing village inside Delta and its lock work does not look like the rest of the municipality. The village core sits north of Ladner Trunk Road and west of Arthur Drive, with 1930s and older residences, mortise hardware, and a small commercial strip on Delta Street and Chisholm Street. Around it are working farms, the Ladner Harbour boat basin and the 1990s cul-de-sac subdivisions of Holly, Hawthorne and Neilsen Grove.

Three job types dominate. Heritage hardware in the village: mortise cases with a separate key and knob spindle, rim locks on back porches, and brass knob sets worn smooth. River damp swells the stiles on these doors, so the complaint is usually a latch that no longer meets the strike rather than a failed cylinder. We rebuild the case, re-pin or replace the cylinder, and shim or move the strike. Where a case is beyond saving we fit a modern deadbolt behind period-matched trim.

Farm and outbuilding security on the flats around Arthur Drive, Port Guichon and Westham Island. A single property can carry a machine shed, a cold store, an irrigation pump housing, a fuel cabinet and several field gates, each with its own padlock and its own key. We key those alike so one key runs the operation, and swap hardware-store padlocks for shrouded-shackle bodies and stainless hasps that survive a winter of rain and salt off the dyke.

Village storefronts and the harbour. The Delta Street and Chisholm Street businesses are small operators in converted heritage buildings, often with a shop door, a lane door and an upstairs unit sharing one entrance, which is a master key problem rather than a single-lock problem. Down at the water, net sheds, dock lockers and boat sheds off McNeely Way need corrosion-rated padlocks rather than plated ones that seize by February. We reach Ladner Village, Holly, Hawthorne, Neilsen Grove, Port Guichon, River Road, Elliott Street and Westham Island over the single-lane bridge.

Tsawwassen sits at the far south-west corner of Delta, past the Highway 17 junction, and it has a lock profile of its own driven by three things: the BC Ferries terminal, the shoreline, and a housing stock that runs from 1960s ranchers to new subdivisions.

The ferry terminal generates the calls nothing else does. Keys go over on a sailing in a pocket that boarded with somebody else, or into the water off the causeway, and a car sits in the terminal lots until a key exists. That is an at-the-vehicle job: we pull the key code, cut a blade and write a new key to the immobiliser, from $180 plus the key type, with registration or insurance in your name and photo identification checked first. Tell dispatch which lot the car is in and whether you are trying to make a sailing, and we will be honest about whether 30-45 minutes makes it.

Tsawwassen Mills and the commercial strip add ordinary retail work: storefront cylinders, closers, staff-change rekeys at $25-$45 per cylinder, and vehicle lockouts in the mall lots.

The shoreline is the other local factor. Boundary Bay, Beach Grove and the English Bluff streets take salt air straight off the water, and a plated cylinder on an exposed porch pits and stiffens within a couple of winters. Lubricant buys weeks. Hardware rated for the exposure is the actual fix, at $80-$160 installed per door, and the same goes for the padlocks on beach-side sheds, gates and boat storage. The 56th Street corridor, Pebble Hill and the newer subdivisions inland get standard residential work: turnover rekeys, deadbolt upgrades and keyed-alike sets so the house, garage and gate run on one key.

North Delta is the third community and the busiest for ordinary residential work. It runs along the Scott Road corridor and up through Sunshine Hills, Nordel, Annieville, Sungod, Delta Manor and Scottsdale, and it is mostly detached family housing built from the 1960s onward, a lot of it now carrying basement suites.

That makes turnover rekeying the steady job here. Re-pinning a standard cylinder is $25-$45 with two keys cut on the truck, and a three or four door house is normally finished inside half an hour. The right pattern for a suited house is a suite key and a main-floor key that do not cross, with the shared laundry, side entrance and mailbox keyed sensibly around them, and a note of what opens what left behind.

The second North Delta pattern is upgrades. Nineteen-sixties and seventies builders fitted knob-only entry doors and short strike screws as standard, and a lot of them are still in place. A Grade 2 or better deadbolt with a one-inch throw and a reinforced strike plate with three-inch screws into the framing does more for a Sunshine Hills or Nordel front door than any amount of cylinder upgrading. Keys are cut at the counter at 4105 Macdonald St in Vancouver or on the truck at your Delta address. A blank is $4.75, a standard house or office key is $5-$15, specialty and commercial blanks are $8-$30, and restricted Mul-T-Lock, Medeco and Schlage Primus keys are $30-$80 each cut to the registered code against written authorisation. A programmed transponder key is $180-$280 and a proximity smart key is $280-$420. Mercedes, BMW and Land Rover keys are $400-$900. With one working key still in hand a spare is cheaper: $180-$240 for a transponder and $300-$420 for a smart key, and booking that spare in your own driveway is a great deal less painful than originating one in a ferry lot. All keys lost starts at $180 plus the key type, needs registration or insurance in your name plus photo identification, and on some 2015 and newer vehicles carries a manufacturer security delay of 10 to 60 minutes.

Ignition work is covered too: a key that will not turn is usually a worn key rather than a failed cylinder, and we test in that order at the car. Most makes from 2008 onward are handled at the roadside, with per-make notes on Honda, Toyota and Ford, plus ignition repair and car key replacement.

Delta commercial work splits between two industrial estates and a handful of village high streets, and they want different things.

Annacis Island and Tilbury are warehouse and light-manufacturing country. The recurring work is roll-shutter and roller-door locks, yard gate hardware, keyed-alike padlock sets so one key runs a compound, and master key systems for the office side of a unit. Panic hardware and exit devices get inspected against the exit requirements while we are there. A commercial lock change is $80-$380 per door and a staff-change rekey is $25-$45 per standard cylinder.

Ladner village, the 56th Street strip in Tsawwassen and the Scott Road corridor are small-operator retail. One owner, a few staff, often a shared lane door and an upstairs tenant. That is a two or three level master key system rather than a pile of separate locks: from $300 setup plus $30-$80 per cylinder, or $60-$200 per cylinder on a restricted keyway, with a written key registry so you know who holds what.
