Ford moved from the earlier 40-bit 4D63 chip to an 80-bit version on many vehicles from around the 2011 model year, and the two are not interchangeable even though the keys can look identical. This is the original equipment key with the 80-bit 4D63 chip. If your Ford-group vehicle needs the 80-bit chip, an older 40-bit key will cut and turn but the engine will not stay running. Ask us to confirm which chip your vehicle uses; it varies by model and year. Being original equipment, the head and chip come from Ford's own supply chain rather than an aftermarket maker, which some owners prefer for a primary key. The process is still the same. We cut the blade, either from the key code or from your current key, and program the chip to PATS at the vehicle, after checking registration and photo ID. On Fords that need two keys to add a third, having two working ones on hand makes it quicker; with fewer we use a different procedure at the vehicle, and all keys lost is handled at the vehicle as well.
