Home
The same licensed team handles home lockouts, re-keys and lock changes. One number for the car and the house.
A spare car key is the cheapest insurance a driver can buy. Cutting one while your original still works costs a fraction of what the same car costs the day every key is gone, because the original key carries everything we need: the blade pattern and, on most vehicles, a chip we can clone straight across.
We duplicate at the counter at 4105 Macdonald St and at your vehicle anywhere in Vancouver. If you have no working key left, this is not the page you need: go to car key replacement.
Price by key type
Transponder spare, cut and programmed: $180-$240. Chip keys for most Honda, Toyota, Ford, GMC and Chrysler vehicles.
Smart key spare: $300-$420. A second push-to-start fob paired to the vehicle.
Restricted and high-security keys, cut to registered code: $30-$80.
Plain metal car key, no chip: a blank plus cutting. Blanks start at $4.75.
A fob-only copy, where the blade is fine and only the remote is missing, is covered on key fob replacement. House and office key duplication is priced separately on key cutting.
The $75 service call covers standard hours. After-hours labour starts at $150 from 5-9 pm and runs $250/hour from 9 pm to 8:30 am, and the rate is quoted on the phone before we dispatch. Every figure on this page is the same one published on the prices page.
Bring the working key
Duplication needs one key that already works. That is the whole difference in price: with a working key we clone or add a key in minutes, and without one the car has to be put into programming mode from scratch.
Bring, or have with you at the vehicle:
The working key or fob itself, not a photo of it.
Every other key you own for the car. A handful of makes force a full relearn when a key is added, and any key not present that day stops working.
The vehicle, for anything with a chip. A plain metal key can be cut from the original alone, but a chip has to meet the car.
Proof of ownership. Registration or insurance papers plus photo ID in the same name. We check this on every car key we cut.
Key types we duplicate
Edge-cut metal keys. The classic notched blade, cut on a duplicator in a couple of minutes.
Laser-cut and sidewinder blades. Thicker keys with a milled channel, cut on a separate machine.
Transponder chip keys. Cloned onto a blank chip where the make allows it, or written into the vehicle as an extra key.
Remote head and flip keys. Blade cut, chip programmed and buttons paired.
Proximity smart keys. Added to the vehicle key memory with the car present.
Valet and emergency blades. The thin blade hidden inside a smart fob, replaced on its own.
Check the original before you copy it
A copy is only as good as the key it is taken from. A blade worn down by years of use produces a copy that is just as worn, and a copy of a copy can drift far enough from the factory cut that it feels loose in the door and sticks in the ignition. If your only key is that old, tell us at the counter: we can cut the new blade from the code instead of from the worn original, so the spare fits the lock as it was built.
It is also worth asking whether the key is really the problem. If the original already needs jiggling to turn in the ignition, a perfect copy will jiggle too, because the wear is inside the cylinder. That points to ignition repair, and it is better to know before you pay for a spare that cannot cure the fault.
A cut spare is not yet a working spare
On a car with an immobiliser, a spare has two halves. The blade is cut to open the doors, and the chip is cloned or written to the vehicle so the engine will start. A spare that has been cut but never registered will open the car and then refuse to run it, which is the situation that sends people to car key programming after buying a blank elsewhere. Our spares are finished and test-started before we take payment, so that is not a surprise you meet on a cold morning.
Where the spare is a remote or push-to-start fob rather than a plain key, the buttons have to be paired as well, and the details are on key fob replacement. House and office duplicates are a different counter job; see key cutting.
In the shop or at your vehicle
A plain metal duplicate is a walk-in job: the counter cuts it while you wait. Anything with a chip has to meet the car, so either drive to the shop or we come to you. Both are the same price for the key itself.
We work out of one shop at 4105 Macdonald St in Vancouver and dispatch from there, and you get the arrival time for your address when you call. Cities further out take longer, and the areas we cover are listed on the service areas page.
Blank keys, fobs and cases are also stocked in the automotive keys section.
Hardware store, dealer or locksmith
A hardware store or key kiosk cuts a plain metal blade, and that is the whole list. It cannot program a chip or pair a smart fob, and most kiosks do not stock laser-cut blanks. On a car with an immobiliser, a kiosk copy opens the door and never starts the engine.
The dealer has the right part and the programming for its own brand. The cost is logistics: the car goes to them by appointment, and with no working key it may need a tow to get there.
An automotive locksmith cuts and programs across most makes at the vehicle rather than in a service bay. Coverage is not universal across every model year, which is why we ask for the year, make, model and VIN on the call.
Copying a car key downtown or in a condo parkade
Most downtown and Yaletown cars live under the building, behind a gate that only opens for a resident fob, often with no phone signal below the first level and a clearance too low for a van. Book with the parkade entrance, your level and your stall number ready, and plan to meet the technician at the gate.
The round building fob on the same ring is not a car key. Strata and rental buildings run encrypted access control, and a new fob is issued and registered against your unit by the strata or property manager. We do not copy those without the building's authorisation, so ask your building manager for an extra one.
When duplication is not the right job
Three cases send you somewhere else, and it is better to know before you book.
No working key at all. That is all keys lost, covered on all keys lost and priced from $180.
The key turns in the doors but not the ignition. The cylinder is worn, not the key, so a copy will not fix it. See ignition repair.
The blade works but the remote does not. That is a fob fault. See key fob replacement.

Service area
Auto Locksmith, at your door.
The vans leave our shop at 4105 Macdonald St for car key replacement, fob programming, ignition repair and lockouts for all makes across Metro Vancouver. Every city we cover has its own page under service areas.
Why does my new key open the doors but not start the engine?+
It was cut but never programmed. The blade is right, so the locks turn, but the immobiliser does not recognise the chip. Bring the key and the car together and the chip is paired to the vehicle.
How much does a spare car key cost, and how long does it take?+
A transponder spare is $180-$240 cut and programmed and a smart-key spare is $300-$420. A plain metal key with no chip is a blank from $4.75 plus cutting. A transponder key takes 30-45 minutes including programming and a proximity key 45-60 minutes.
Can you make a key if I have lost every one?+
Yes, but that is key origination rather than duplication. It needs your ownership papers and photo ID at the vehicle and starts at $180. See all keys lost.
Can you copy my condo fob while you copy my car key?+
Usually not. Encrypted strata fobs are issued and registered by your building manager or strata council, so ask the building first.
